Landscape Services in Melody Hill, IN
Landscaping, hardscapes, lawn care, and snow management for Melody Hill homes between US 41 and Oak Hill Road, minutes from our Evansville shop.
Melody Hill sits just north of the Evansville city line, between US 41 and Oak Hill Road, with Lynch Road to the south and the Evansville Regional Airport to the north. Our shop on N Heidelbach Ave is about 3.4 miles away, so it is one of the closest service areas we run. The neighborhood is almost entirely single family homes on established lots, and the yards here have their own set of habits that we plan around.
Why Melody Hill Yards Need a Different Approach
The Melody Hills subdivisions between US 41 and Oak Hill Road started going up in the early 1960s, and St. George Road splits the two halves. Lots from that era usually came with a thin layer of topsoil over graded subsoil, mature shade trees that have since filled in, and foundation plantings that were sized for a much smaller house. Sixty years later the trees are big, the beds are overgrown, and a lot of the original lawn is fighting shade.
The ground on the north side of Evansville is loess, meaning windblown silt that settled into low hills. The USDA soil series mapped across these uplands include Hosmer and Alford, both silt loams. Hosmer was first described in Vanderburgh County back in 1939. It is moderately well drained on top but has a fragipan, a dense layer 20 to 36 inches down that water moves through very slowly. From December into April a perched water table can sit above that pan. That is why a Melody Hill yard can be soggy in March, crack open in August, and why downspouts and grading matter more here than people expect.
Climate adds to it Evansville moved from USDA zone 6a to 7a on the 2023 hardiness map, so plant choices that were borderline a decade ago now hold up through winter. The area gets more than 40 inches of rain a year, May is the wettest month, and July runs humid with highs near 88. Plants that handle both wet spring feet and a muggy summer are the ones that last in Melody Hill.
Being outside the city limits changes a few practical things too The City of Evansville yard waste pickup through Republic Services is for city trash customers only, so county residents in Melody Hill do not get it. Leaves and brush either go to a drop site, get hauled, or get handled on the property under county burning rules. We plan cleanups around that.

How We Work In Melody Hill
We start every Melody Hill Job with a walkthrough
We look at where water goes when it leaves the roof, where the lawn thins under the oaks and maples, and how the grade runs toward the house or the neighbor. On loess soil with a fragipan, we would rather fix drainage first than install plants that will drown in April.
Because the shop is close, we can keep a tight schedule here
Mowing routes, spring and fall cleanups, and snow and ice management for the homes and small commercial properties along US 41 and Lynch Road are all easy to service from Heidelbach Ave. We do residential and commercial work in Melody Hill.
Hardscape work in Melody Hill goes through the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Building Commission, which handles permitting for the county, not just the city.
We handle that part of the process with you. Larger grading or drainage changes can also touch the Vanderburgh County stormwater drainage rules, which apply to unincorporated areas like Melody Hill. We tell you up front if a project is going to need review.

What kind of soil is under Melody Hill yards?
The north side of Evansville sits on loess hills, and the USDA soil series mapped here include Hosmer and Alford silt loams. Hosmer has a fragipan 20 to 36 inches down that drains very slowly, and a perched water table can sit above it from December into April. Beds and patios in Melody Hill get built with that in mind: amended planting holes, base compaction and drainage behind walls, not just topsoil on top.
Does Melody Hill get the City of Evansville leaf and yard waste pickup?
No. Melody Hill is a census designated place in Center Township outside the Evansville city limits. The city yard waste program run through Republic Services is only for customers who pay for city trash on their water and sewer bill, and county residents are not eligible. For Melody Hill cleanups we haul leaves and brush off the property as part of the job so you are not stuck with piles at the curb.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall or patio in Melody Hill?
Permits for Melody Hill run through the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Building Commission, which covers the unincorporated county as well as the city.Raised surfaces more than 30 inches above grade need guards under the Indiana Residential Code. We tell you before the quote is signed whether your project needs review.
Why does my Melody Hill lawn stay wet in spring and crack in summer?
That pattern is typical of the silt loam on the north side of Evansville. Water moves through the top layer fine, then stalls at the dense fragipan underneath, so the lawn stays soggy through a wet May. In July, when highs run near 88 and it is humid, the same silty surface dries and shrinks. Fixing it usually means regrading low spots, redirecting downspouts, aerating and choosing zone 7a plants that tolerate both extremes.
